Fri 28th June -Mr Captain Pat Horner’s Prize to the Ladies Sun 30th Márie O’Donnell team host Dunfanaghy Golf Club Justin Green wins the John Sweeney Memorial
On a day that often felt more November than June conditions-wise, Justin Green (13) produced a sparkling round of golf to win the John Sweeney Memorial with a stunning 64 nett score. A howling wind was blowing around Portsalon on Saturday, darting one way then another, making for extremely tough playing conditions in the always testing stroke-play format. Justin carded four pars and a birdie on his front nine to turn in three-over par before a quality run of five successive par to start the inward nine. After a double-bogey at the 16th – his only blip on the card – he showed the steely response needed to birdie the par-five 17th and signed off his round in real style with a closing par, signing for a 77 gross score, five-over par. An exceptional round, all the more so in the prevailing conditions, and a truly worthy winning score, Justy's name will be added to the magnificent John Sweeney Memorial Trophy. Runner-up on the day was Vincent Bradley (26) with a 68 nett score, secured with pars on the final two holes. The gross went to Ryan McGettigan (Scr) with a level-par 72 score, terrific shooting on the day. Captain's Prize 2024 Mr Pat Horner will host his Captain's Prize on Saturday 29th June. Our Friday evening scrambles and lessons for lady beginner’s introduction to golf is progressing very nicely. We have enough clubs but are short of putters. If you have one that you no longer have need for, abandoned in the attic, Lady Captain Noreen would be delighted to get it. Team News Revive Active Royal Portrush Golf Club hosted Portsalon Golf Club ladies on the wonderful Dunluce course, in the Revive Active. With 2 pairs away and two at home, the windy and rather chilly weather suited our ladies better, as they won with 3 ½ matches. 2 excellent wins away prevented the dreaded tie off hole. Thanks to Royal Portrush for their wonderful hospitality to our visiting ladies. Intermediate Foursomes City of Derry claimed the victory against Portsalon Golf Club on the 4th tie hole in Portsalon. Strong competition in City of Derry saw them capture the home matches while in Portsalon there were two great wins for our home ladies. In the end it came down to a single putt on the 4th to give the visitors the victory. Thanks to City of Derry for their wonderful hospitality to our visiting ladies. Mixed Fourball Friday 14th June sees the Mixed Fourball team take on Dunmurry Golf Club. With 2 pairs at home and two away. Best of luck to the team and hopefully the weather will be kind. Coming Up! Congratulations to Sean Canning and his Ulster Cup team as they overcame City of Derry by 3.5 matches to 2.5 on Saturday afternoon. The home games were won by Donal Callaghan Jr and Alistair Rodger while Joe Ferry was a 2&1 winner in Derry. That meant Brian Devlin's 3up lead on the 16th tee was enough to secure the verdict as that match was called in. Portsalon will face either Carrickfergus or Ormeau next. The fabulously baked homemade scones in the clubhouse hit the spot, as ladies swapped the putting green for the tea! Everyone was in jovial mood, and even managed to gather for the obligatory group photo with Lady Captain Noreen. There was a great welcome from Dunfanaghy for us, both in the shop and the restaurant. Sarah Nicholl rose to the top on a BOT, mainly thanks to the unsuspecting car crossing the path at the 18th who carefully ricocheted her ball onto the green rather than the bunker!
