Coyler is 'The Old Dog for the Hard Road'
It was an oft-used phrase of our much-missed friend and on Saturday it was a prophetic one as Joe Coyle rolled out some of his best golf to win the John Sweeney Memorial with a superb 64-nett score. On a tough day for golf, with the course playing hard and fast and a two-club breeze blowing, Joe carded a fine tally of nine pars and two birdies to win by two shots. Successive bogeys at the 13th and 14th put some pressure on the winner, but he responded with a birdie and two pars over the closing stretch to ensure his name will be etched on the magnificent trophy. The gross prize went the way of Jamie Foley (4) with a fine round of 73 for one-over par, while Deirdre Hensey (22) capped a celebratory week for the clan by taking the Ladies section with a 66 nett score. We had 150 players turned out on the day, with plenty familiar faces crossing from Rosapenna to play in John's memory – thanks to all that played. Open Week 2023
Portsalon's Open Week is looming once more, with the festival of gold set to run from 12th-18th July inclusive. Members will receive notification shortly of when the BRS system will go live for Open Week. Portsalon members will have 24 hours access to all Open Week competitions in order to secure tee times before they are then made live for visiting golfers. As always, it is vitally important that members booking tee times are intending to play them as this has become a drain on available tee-times at weekends, with time sheets routinely booked up once they are opened and time slots being freed in the 12 hours before they are due. John Sweeney Memorial The John Sweeney Memorial takes place this Saturday 24th June, this is an Open stroke play event and the timesheet is available via BRS or book by calling the shop on 074 9159459. Rally Weekend A reminder to all members that this coming weekend is the Donegal International Rally, with the Fanad stages taking place on Saturday. Please allow extra time for travelling to Portsalon and make note of any road closures. The main coast road over Knockalla will be closed from early morning until 7.00pm on Saturday. Hole-in-One Congratulations to Mark Howard who hit a memorable hole-in-one at the 15th during Sunday's competition! Team Golf It was a busy weekend for our teams with three matches taking place on Sunday afternoon. Pride of place went to Johnny Shields' Jimmy Bruen side as they edged out Royal Portrush 3-2, with a quarter-final in the Ulster North section against Falcarragh next up for them on Sunday 2nd July. In the Donegal Seniors League, Joe Hensey led his team to a 5-0 home win on Sunday and they will travel to North West in confident mood on Sunday 2nd July also. Our Donegal League side meanwhile face a tough challenge after they won 3-2 against Cruit Island on Sunday in their opener. Patrick McFadden and James Sandilands are in charge of that panel and they'll need a big push to convert that slender advantage in the second leg.
