Club Matchplay events 2024
Entries are now open via the CLubV1 app for our 2024 Club Matchplay tournaments. Entry is €10 for singles events and €10 per player in doubles. You can also enter by giving your name in the shop. Entries for all events will close on Wednesday May 1st. Alongside the Club Singles and Doubles Matchplay events, we are delighted this year to introduce the Club Scratch Matchplay. This 18-hole knockout tournament will be played without handicap allocation and will therefore endeavour to find the best pound-for-pound matchplay golfer in the club each year. We look forward to seeing some excellent golf played and would urge members to support this competition. Entries now open for: Club Scratch Matchplay, Club Matchplay, Club Doubles Matchplay. Closing date for entries: 1st May Successful Saturday for Portsalon teams Two wins from two for Portsalon on Saturday afternoon as Sean Canning's Ulster Cup team overcame Ballyliffin and Joe Hensey led the Donegal Seniors to victory over neighbours Rosapenna. The Ulster Cup was a split venue affair, with three games in Portsalon and three more simultaneously over in Inishowen. At home, Donal Callaghan Jnr led out the team with a 6&4 win to get the team on the right track, while Brendan McHugh ran into some excellent golf and was defeated on the Matterhorn. In the final pairing, Colm McConigley was three-up thru 13 holes and sunk some good putts to stave off a fightback, winning 3&2. Over at Ballyliffin, Brian Devlin had a seesaw afternoon, going from 3up to 2down before eventually gaining an important half-match on the 18th hole, while Enda McElhinney put a Portsalon point on the board on Ballyliffin's Old Course with a 3&2 win, before Alan O'Doherty was defeated on the same scoreline. It all meant Portsalon got the verdict, 3.5 to 2.5 matches in a keenly contested and very sporting affair in both venues. Portsalon will face Strabane or Foyle next. Joe Hensey and his Donegal Seniors trailed to Rosapenna 3-2 after the first leg in Downings but they were able to turn that around on home soil. DP Logue and Felix Larkin led the team out, winning their match 4&3 and they were followed by Ollie O'Dowd and Finbarr McNamee, who marked their first competitive games for Portsalon in winning style. The reliable axis that is Paul Armstrong and Dermot Boyce put another crucial win on the board, while Captain Joe and Gary Sheehan were all square after 18 holes in their game – enough to seal the win for Portsalon by 5.5 to 4.5. Next up for Portsalon on this journey will be a two-legged clash with Dunfanaghy. Junior Cup win over Portrush
Congratulations to Kevin McGonagle and his Junior Cup team as they overcame Portrush 3-2 on Sunday afternoon in a tense battle. The split-venue saw Portrush hosting three games with home advantage. Davitt Walsh led out the side for Portsalon on the famous Dunluce layout and he put an all-important point on the board, winning 2&1. Dermot Shields went down battling 3&2, while Kevin Boyce was in a scrap to the wire but was defeated on the 18th green. Back on home soil, Cian Page recorded a 2&1 success while Daniel Shields was all-square after 18 holes and had to go the extra miles, with his victory on fourth playoff hole swinging the tie in Portsalon's favour. Congrats to Kevin and his team on a fine result, with four Portsalon Junior Cup debutants and a teenager lining out! Team News Portsalon's Pierce Purcell team under the guidance of Daniel Shields suffered playoff pain against Roe Valley on Sunday. The new format this season sees two homes games and two away ties playing simultaneously, with the designated 'home' team having advantage if a playoff is needed. Portsalon pairing of Dean Shields and Alistair Rodger were handsome 7&5 winners on home soil, while Shane Sandilands and Brian Haughey recovered from being four down after nine to tie their match. In Roe Valley, Jonathan and Mark Gallagher landed a half match, while John McGettigan and Gary Sheehan were defeated by a strong home pairing. In the playoff, the Gallagher boys were denied on the second hole by a par, as they lipped out to keep the match going. A tough defeat to swallow. Thanks to John Shields, who was overseeing events in Portsalon and relaying the news to Roe Valley. However, it was Vera Kearney and Sheila Horner who were about, and not a hair was ruffled. Ladies took to the course to play the qualifier on the alternate day to get ahead of the incoming stormy weather. Even Lady Captain Noreen, an automatic qualifier, was spotted on the 7th green. Kathleen did play havoc on Sunday, therefore the decision was made to hold the qualifier on the Alternate day Friday 12th & Sunday 14th April. Those who entered on Friday 7th will get another opportunity to re- enter if they wish. Their best card will qualify. Acknowledgement Mea cupla, I was so wrapped up in my win last week – see how I managed to mention this rare feat once again – I completely forgot to acknowledge the exceptional work carried out by Claire McGonagle throughout the ladies winter links in Portsalon Golf Club. Sorting, checking cards and returning scores in a timely manner is not an easy feat, and it is very much appreciated by all the ladies who take part. Taking the top spot in the Ladies & Gents Open there was nothing foolhardy about her scoring. Starting off with a Par and keeping the ship steady all the way, peppered with 4 more pars, she cruised to a win with 43 points. Captain’s Day Ladies Winter Links The Captain’s Day of the ladies winter links was held on Thursday last in what could only be described as challenging conditions with wind, rain and everything in between, thrown at the ladies. The chocolates from Lady Captain, did sweeten the day up, for some more than others! Of course, there is always one person who bucks the trend, and though I say so myself, she played quite exquisite golf. Her playing partners were later heard to remark, they never witnessed such a splendid performance. Of course, as PRO, I take poetic license with my first visit to the winner’s enclosure in some time and could write a novel about it! There may well be a hole-by-hole account in next week’s notes, so stay awake for that! It was the three ball dream team undoubtedly with the two ladies taking inspiration from the leader! Sarah Nicholl took the runner-up spot on BOT from Deirdre Hensey. Sarah Nicholl also won the Nett Order of Merit ,while Anne Cannon of Letterkenny Golf Club won the Gross over the course of the Links.
