LADIES NOTES
Claire Ferry Lady Captain's Day
Claire Ferry, the 52nd Lady Captain of Portsalon Golf Club, celebrated her Captain's Day in great style on Saturday 8th July.
Despite the early morning threat of gale force winds, it became a beautiful day with warm sunshine in the afternoon. The blowy conditions in the morning added an extra challenge for some, but for the expert links players it was 'golf heaven'.
Lady Captain Claire wished she could join the golfers but her official duties kept her off the fairways. Claire did a fabulous job of meeting and greeting every player and visitor with her warm enthusiasm.
Beautiful refreshments were provided before play and the magnificent display of prizes along with expert floral arrangements added to the sense of occasion. There was a unique atmosphere of excitement and anticipation.
No one including Lady Captain Claire however could have anticipated the fabulous scores or the order of the prize winners. Claire was just delighted the golf was so keenly contested and produced a great competition, which was won by Sarah Nicholl with a magnificent 44 points as she held off Roisin McCormack on 42 points to seal the Ladies Major for the first time.
After her wind swept morning, Claire reappeared at 7pm looking amazing and was surrounded by her very sociable sisters, brothers, guests and her lady members as the scene was set for a great evening.
The Lady Captain’s dinner was made extra special by the attentive staff in the restaurant and bar who were determined Claire’s evening would be the best ever.
Although Claire claims she doesn’t like public speaking she delivered a very natural and witty speech, introduced by herlifelong friend and playing partner Noreen McConigley.
Noreen reminded the audience that Claire only took up golf after her illustrious goalscoring career with Fanad United on the football field was ended! Luckily golf satisfied Claire's competitive streak and she stayed focused on golf, becoming the champion golfer she is today.
Claire paid tribute to all the club staff, especially the greenkeepers who regardless of 26 days without rain in June managed to have the course in such magnificent shape.
Claire expressed her appreciation to Noreen, her committee, her family friends and sponsors who had all supported her. Claire recounted the 'Away Day' in Greencastle and thanked all the members who made it such a brilliant day out.
Claire also said how grateful she was and humbled by the amount of cards, gifts and good wishes she had received.
After the presentation Gerry O'Sullivan got the party started, the dancing (particularly the Jiving by Claire and the Ferry family) and the singing continued well past everyone's bedtime, it seemed no one wanted to go home.
