Club News Captains Away Weekend Congratulations to John Martin who won the Captains Away Weekend in Knightsbrook County Meath. He was inspired by the European Ryder Cup team to acquire the coveted prize of an Adare Manor 2027 Ryder Cup Jersey, presented to him by Vice Captain Dr. Enda Cullen Donegal League finalist in a battle with Buncrana Cathal Canning's reigning Donegal League champs have their work cut out to hold onto the Paddy Carr Memorial Trophy after Sunday's first leg ended in a 4-1 success for Buncrana. The contest was played in majestic autumnal sunshine on the shores of Lough Swilly and, as anticipated the home team were strong on their own patch. Portsalon's opening pairings of Ryan McGettigan & Jack Patton and Johnny Shields & Shane Magee both saw their matches end in defeat on the 17th green. In match three, Kevin Boyce and Eamonn McConigley came up with a superb display to close out a 5&4 win and give Portsalon the match they desperately wanted. Behind them, Davitt Walsh and Stephen Connolly were defeated on 16th hole after another close contest and, in the final match, Paddy McGowan and Justin Green saw their hopes dashed on the 18th green as Buncrana claimed victory on the tricky par three. It was certainly a gallant effort from the entire Portsalon side, with the matches played in a friendly and competitive spirit. Buncrana have a lead to hold onto for the second leg on Sunday 12th October in Portsalon but the home side will know there is little in it in terms of holes and will be setting their stall out to get the four matches or more they need to retain the Donegal League. Some might suggest the day is a breeze on the golfing calendar, but in fact it was gale force winds from start to finish. The positive thinkers were delighted with the absence of rain to add to their woes. Dermot Boyce remarked he felt his chances slipped at the 5th after an errant tee shot, well short of the mark, found itself ricocheting off a lady’s golf bag. Apparently after much searching by his fellow team members, two of whom probably didn’t want to find it anyway, as there were a few cents at stake, it was deduced the errant ball had found its way into a ladies’ bag which was at the 6th tee box. Indeed, the following day an unaccounted ball was found in the bag, and Dermot can claim his Top Flite no. 6 in the office upon proof of ownership! Hugh McGinley proved that distance isn’t everything. It was alleged he was 250 metres behind his playing partners with his drive on the second, however a nice little pitching wedge on to the green, with 2 putts and he walked away with a super par. This was a very important par as it was the start of a great run for him to lift the Past Captain’s trophy at the end of the night. He did say there were a couple of nervous moments for him and his three playing partners at some holes on the way in, but they decided to all keep it together and honour the lost ball, which had produced many happy rounds for Dermot Boyce in the past. Meanwhile the ladies were being led all the way by someone who was recovering from illness. No truer words are there, than ‘beware of the injured golfer’. Deirdre O’Toole checked in with a simmering winter cold and hoarseness. It’s a natural instinct to keep the head down and hope the round finishes quickly when unwell, but in the game of golf, keeping the head down is a pretty good strategy as well. This saw Deirdre lift the Ladies Past Captain’s trophy at the end of the night, her first time to win it, she remarked about how pleasant a day celebrating Past Captains is. Gathering all together for dinner in the clubhouse, it is a wonderful opportunity to chat about past captaincy’s, how our club is progressing, but in particular have a relaxed night full of banter and chat. Long live this tradition in our club that we look forward to every year! Mary McDaid Cup Team The breezy conditions continued into Sunday for the team qualifiers. Donegal League defence to go the distance Cathal Canning and his Donegal League squad have booked their place in the final after a tense win over Strabane this evening. The second leg was amid gusting winds in Strabane, with Portsalon leading 4-1 from the first leg. The home side were always likely to push things to the wire in their attempts to overturn that deficit and so it proved. Keeping things tight was going to be the order of the day, with Portsalon attempting to grab that one game on the road. The opening two pairings, Ryan McGettigan & Shane Magee and Johnny Shields & Jack Friel were defeated 2&1, enough to leave Portsalon still five holes to the good. The remaining three games on the course were all on holes 17 and 18 with the tension ratcheted up. Eamonn McConigley and Kevin Boyce led their game 1up and won the 18th for a 2up win and the point Portsalon needed to secure the win. Behind, both pairings of Davitt Walsh & Stephen Connolly and Alistair Rodger and Paddy McGowan were 1 down through 17 holes, ensuring there wasn't enough holes left for Strabane to overturn the outcome and the final two games were called in. Well done to Team Captain Cathal on reaching the final once more, where his side will face Buncrana GC for the Paddy Carr Donegal League crown and the chance for Portsalon to land back-to-back wins for the first time. Donegal Seniors falls short in Murvagh Commiserations to Team Captain Joe Hensey and his gallant Donegal Seniors squad after they came up agonisingly short in their county final against Donegal GC in Murvagh on Sunday. Portsalon took a 3.5 to 1.5 advantage from the first leg on home soil as they travelled through the gap for the second set of matches. It was always going to be a tough challenge for the visiting side against a strong selection from Murvagh. Portsalon's opening pairing of Shane Magee and Pascal Cullen were defeated and matches three and four also went Murvagh's way despite the best effort of Enda Cullen & Eunan McGlynn and Alistair Rodger & Brian Devlin. Hope sprang eternal for Portsalon as Diarmuid Logue and Philip Durning won match two on the course to put victory overall in the mix. It left the final pairing of Chuck McTaggart and John Logue with the game hinging on their tie. Their match was close from start to finish and came through 16 holes all-square but it was Murvagh that went 1up after 17, enough to seal a county title for their Captain Donie McIntyre and his squad with Portsalon beaten on holes. A tough loss for skipper Joe and his troops after a good summer, the second year in a row they have fallen one short, but they certainly cannot be faulted on effort and commitment. Congratulations to Murvagh on their hard-earned victory and for the sporting manner in which both legs of the final were played. The conditions were far from appealing but the large turnout reflected the esteem in which Madam President is held and the chance to claim the final major of the season was enough to entice the players out in the rain. Claire's tally of 40 points was enough to secure the top prize, with just one point to spare on a trio of 39-point finishers. On Saturday, Cathal Canning takes his Donegal League squad to Strabane for the second leg of their semi-final. Portsalon are clutching a 4-1 advantage from the first leg, but it is sure to be a tough test against a strong Strabane team on home soil. The winners will face Buncrana GC in the 2025 final after they overcame Murvagh in their semi-final on Saturday. On Sunday, Joe Hensey and his Donegal Over 55s are heading Thru the Gap to tackle Murvagh in second leg of their final. Portsalon have their noses in front after the first leg, 3.5 to 1.5, and once again a battle to the winning post is almost certain. After missing out at the final hurdle 12 months ago, Joe and his panel will be eager to see it over the line now and he's picked a strong side to go into battle. Best of luck to both Portsalon teams over the weekend. Ladies News President’s Day While it is true to say that some pilots found the conditions tough 30,000 feet above the ground, the same could not be said for Claire McGonagle who embraced the conditions on President Mae Blaney’s Day in Portsalon Golf Club on Saturday 30thAugust. While flights were being diverted from Dublin, and unable to land, the ball of Claire McGonagle remained on course and on target. Playing off 6hcp, Claire’s gusty performance returned an incredible 40 points to win the overall President’s Prize and final major of the year. 5 Pars and 2 Birdies on the front 9 were quickly followed by 8 Pars and 1 birdie on the Back 9, which also included the longest drive for the Ladies. As the third lady to hold the office of President of Portsalon Golf Club, Mae Blaney, who is also a past Lady Captain, has been a committed member of the club over many years serving on the Ladies Committee and currently as Chair of Council. She is universally respected by the members, and that was proven by the huge turnout in conditions that really dictated a cosy lie-in on Saturday morning. Joe Hensey and his Donegal Over 55s hosted Murvagh GC on Sunday afternoon in their Donegal county final first leg. The Portsalon team managed to get 3.5 matches out of the five played, leaving the tie in the balance for the second leg in two weeks. Also on Sunday, Cathal Canning's Donegal League team were at home to Strabane in their semi-final first leg. Portsalon took four matches from the five on offer, with the second leg to come in Strabane in a fortnight. Club Matchplay Final Best of luck to Patrick McGowan and Justin Green, who will contest this year's Club Matchplay final after seeing off John Shields and Paddy Kelly Jnr respectively in two close semi-final battles. President's Day Mae Blaney's big day takes place on Saturday as she hosts her first President's Day. Mae has long been a wonderful ambassador for Portsalon GC and it is fitting that she has become just the second lady member to hold the office of Club President. Lady Captain's Day sparkles in the sun Huge congrats to Lady Captain Roisin McCormack on a superb day last Saturday. The ladies competing for the main event in their season were treated royally and, with the sun shining and course in superb order, conditions were perfect. Roisin could scarcely have asked for things to go any better, but better they were to get as her husband Aodh put together a winning score of 46 points to claim the Lady Captain's Prize to the Gents and make it a day not to be forgotten for the family! Well done all and good luck for the remainder of the year to our Lady Captain. Dad's Army on the march this weekend Joe Hensey is busy drawing the battle lines and sharpening the tactical manoeuvres as his Donegal Over 55s team prepare for the first leg of their county decider against Murvagh in Portsalon. Joe and his team were pipped at the post a year ago by Cloughaneely but have redoubled their efforts and find themselves back once again in front of the final hurdle. Best of luck Captain Joe and team! Also on Sunday, Cathal Canning's Donegal League side are facing Strabane in the first leg of their semi-final. Both matches are taking place in Portsalon. While the greens were a little fast for some people, they did not present any problems for Anne Speedie who lifted Portsalon Golf Club’s 2025 Lady Captain’s Prize on Saturday night. As she said in her speech, it’s not often she goes to the first tee in such relaxed form! Maybe that’s all that was needed, as it was 1978 when she last won a Lady Captain’s Prize! Of course, that could be down to the wonderful spread of home bakes and teas the ladies were treated to, before starting their round. Mary Barrett, the Lady Captain’s mother had been a little busy and maybe had a bit of help from Jackie himself getting the scones, breads and cakes baked. As the ladies finished their rounds, they were greeted by the Prosecco Table where they could sit, chill with a little glass of bubbly and enjoy the dazzling views of the 1st hole and Ballymastocker Beach. As is tradition, the MC for the night was Lady Vice Captain Frances Shannon who did exceptionally well getting through the announcements. Mr Captain Brendan Cullen, in his remarks congratulated Lady Captain Roisin on her commitment and dedicated service to Portsalon over many years. President Mae Blaney also spoke of Roisin’s dedication to the club having served previously as a Lady Captain. Roisin spoke warmly of her family’s love of Portsalon and her parents Jackie and Mary are still active members. All her siblings play golf and so the joy the game has brought to the McCormack family cannot be underestimated. It was a family affair at the presentation with the mens prize going to the Lady captain’s husband Aodh. It was his first time to lift the main prize on a Captain’s Day, so it was fitting that it was on such a special day for his family! Portsalon teams progress in Donegal championships Congratulations to Joe Hensey and Cathal Canning as they oversaw wins for their Over 55s and Donegal League teams across the weekend. The Dad's Army selection had no problems following the orders sent down by Captain Hensey on Saturday as they completed a comprehensive success against neighbours Rosapenna. After taking three matches from their trip to Downings in July, the Seniors Matchplay operatives were in a commanding position for the second leg. Things were tight on the frontline for them, with both of the first pairings getting half matches, but a strong platoon were following and handsome wins for Alistair Rodger and Brian Devlin (5&4), John Logue and Enda Cullen (5&4) and Paul Armstrong and Dermot Boyce (5&4) meant the Portsalon bomb squad marched on. They will face Murvagh or Ballybofey & Stranorlar in the final as they look to go one step further than last year's final defeat to Cloughaneely. Good luck to Joe and team in the final. Cathal Canning's Donegal League team are the defending champions and they overturned their quarter-final deficit against Bundoran on Sunday to set up a last-four contest against Strabane. Trailing by 3.5 to 1.5 from the first leg, Cathal's team got the 3.5 matches needed and a sufficient holes cushion to see the remaining game on the course halted. Michael Campbell and Shane Magee were denied a win by a closing birdie from Bundoran on the 18th green as match one ended all-square. There were wins for the impressive pairing of Jack Friel and Kevin Boyce (6&5), Patrick McGowan and Alistair Rodger (5&4) and Enda McElhinney and Donal Callaghan Jr (6&5), while Davitt Walsh and Eamonn McConigley saw their duel with a strong Bundoran pairing called in after 15 holes with the match all-square after the Portsalon advantage on holes became unassailable. McAleer win Charlie Canning Memorial Trophy The prestigious Charlie Canning Memorial Trophy was held on Saturday as the Canning family once more put on a superb day of golf in memory of our former Portsalon greenkeeper. With the busy August Bank Holiday in full swing, it was a large turnout and Padraig McAleer emerged as the winner with a stunning tally of 46 points. His round included nine pars alongside birdies on the 8th and 17th holes and that was enough to ease him home two points in front of Dean Doherty. Jack Friel picked up the gross prize with an exceptional round of 71 blow, going around in one-under par, while the ladies prize went to Moira McGee. Thanks once again to the Canning Family for their continuing commitment to hosting this event in memory of Charlie each year, it has become a staple on the Portsalon calendar. Charlie Canning Memorial Trophy Results Winner: Padraig McAleer (17) – 46 pts Runner-up: Dean Doherty (32) – 44 pts Gross: Jack Friel (5) – 37 pts Third: Chuck McTaggart (12) – 44 pts Best Lady: Moira McGee (24) – 39 pts First Nine: Daniel Shields (7) – 22 pts Second Nine: Charlie McCahill (22) – 24 pts Barton Cup glory for Sean Barrett Sean Barrett was always considered good under a high ball in his day on the football fields and he proved that he could handle the toughest of conditions on Bank Holiday Monday to win the famous Barton Cup Trophy at Portsalon. Sean was the second-best qualifier over the Barton Nine on Monday morning to make it into the quarter-finals. There he took out young Dan Martin before turning his sights on former Barton Cup champ Rory McGettigan, who had taken the scalp of Paul Whorton in the last eight. In the bottom half of the draw, Daniel Shields saw off Brian McAleer, while club captain Brendan Cullen was defeated by Noel McCormick – another previous Barton Cup hero. Both the former winners bowed out in the semi-finals, leaving the all-Milford pairing of Sean Barrett and Daniel Shields to battle it out. Some exceptionally good golf was played by both men in difficult conditions but it was Sean that emerged on top to claim the famous trophy. Ryan McGettigan wins Portsalon Scratch Cup
Ryan McGettigan won the Portsalon Scratch Cup sponsored by Manor Motors on Saturday with a three-under par score of 69, enough to bring him home two clear of the chasing pack. Ryan was solid and dependable in his round, banking early birdies at the first and third holes. His only dropped shot of the round would arrive at the tough sixth. He played regulation golf for much of the round thereafter, picking up two more birdies at the par fives on the back nine, the 11th and 17th, to land the spoils. The runner-up was Padraig McHale, ending out Enda Kennedy on a break of tie. Paschal Cullen took the nett prize, carding a 68 nett score with three birdies and five bogeys.
